Men's Basketball Program Status Update

Men's Basketball Program Status Update

At the end of April, Tom Parks, SCF Men's Basketball head coach for the previous five seasons, accepted an offer to become the head men's basketball coach at Casper College in Wyoming. We wish Coach Parks well, and value the many accomplishments achieved on the court and in the classroom under his direction.

As a result, SCF has made the difficult decision to suspend the Men's Basketball program for the 2023-2024 season. With no head coach, only five returning players, and no letters of intent (LOI) signed by incoming basketball athletes for Fall 2023, the College is not positioned to ensure a strong or positive experience in accordance with our mission. The suspension will allow for an evaluation of the program, the overall investment in student life and enrollment collegewide, and basketball's place in our strategic enrollment priorities.

Some of the questions you may have or receive include:

When will we have an update on the basketball suspension?

We anticipate having further communication at the end of the Fall 2023 semester.

What is happening with current basketball student athletes?

Nick Cichielo, interim athletic director, is working with the five student athletes in collaboration with our College and Career Success coaches to ensure they have support moving forward in their transfer from or continuation with SCF.

Are there any new recruits signed with SCF basketball that will be impacted?

No, there were no LOIs issued for new basketball student athletes for Fall 2023, and no scholarships were awarded to any student athletes for the 2023-2024 season.

Are any other SCF athletic teams impacted?

No, all the other SCF teams are continuing as planned for the 2023-2024 season.

For additional questions or concerns on this matter, please contact Nick Cichielo at CichieN@SCF.edu or 65574.
